UX/UI Designer
Duration

Type
An added feature design
Goal
Design a multi-profile function to the Crunchyroll platform.
Overview
The Problem:
As of now Crunchyroll does not offer their users a multi-user function. Users who share the same account information do not have the freedom to create their own watchlists and other user specific needs.
The Solution:
Adding a multi-user function on Crunchyroll, would give users more freedom and tailor their watching needs to their preference.
Research
Objectives
Identify and understand the competitive streaming services and and how they compare to Crunchyroll.
Identify user needs and pain points of the user base already using Crunchyroll.
Competitive Analysis
I explored four streaming websites. I wanted to narrow the scope on the streaming platforms to the audience of anime watchers and key features availability. The following were most common for a streaming site offering anime.
Key features like multi-platform watching, simulcasts, variety in dubbed/subbed anime, and the option of other content being available.
Clean interface and easy navigation of the streaming site.
Well organized categories of content.
Vast selection of anime content to view.
Screener Survey
After desk research and analyzing my findings on the competitor analysis. I moved onto a screener survey. Because this project was an added feature to an existing platform user interviews were not necessary to move forward with.
Participants: users who were in between the ages of 19-49yrs old, that watch anime content.
Number of Participants: 10
online user input on changes that should be made to the Crunchyroll website from reddit and screener survey.
The Findings
Used affinity mapping to analyze user survey findings to gather and organize patterns to create a solution for an added feature to Crunchyroll’s platform.
Majority of participants most wanted features focused on daily usage needs like having multi-user profiles and intro/outro skip options.
Define
How might we make the crunchyroll platform more user accessible by helping users create user profiles for multi-user accounts.
How might we organize the layout of Crunchyroll to better assist users using the platform?
How might we support users to efficiently find new series to watch on the platform ?
How Might We’s
For the added feature, I prioritized the multi-profile feature for multi-user accounts.
Feature Prioritization
User Persona
Compiling the findings from the affinity mapping, I was able to come up with a user persona profile that represented the user group.
Ideation
User/Task Flows
User and Task flows shown are user wants to manage a profile account and deleting a user profile account. To view more user and task flows visit the link below.
Low Fidelity Sketches
Low fidelity sketches were made to follow the user and task flows. I used a sketching app (Excalidraw) to help organize and create sketches that were clean and straightforward.
Main features that were prioritized for the key screens.
Manage profile page
Multi-user profile page
Switch profiles pop up page
Mid-Fidelity Wireframes
The digitized mid-fidelity wireframes were made with the addition of the adding profile page.
Design
Crunchyroll Style Tile/ UI Kit
I found a similar Crunchyroll style tile on figma community and added the addition of the popup. The popup addition included multi-user profiles.
Prototyping and Testing
Prototype
A prototype was made in figma for conducting usability testing. The prototype is following the task flows of logging into an account, managing a user account, deleting a user account, and adding a new user profile.
Usability Testing
7 participants
unmoderated testing over the Maze platform.
Key Points
Participants were able to complete the tasks fairly easily
first time using the Maze platform to conduct usability, had to give more information to participants.
The main cause of errors or pain points were due to Crunchyroll’s UI, they do not have a call to action for logging in, so participants were confused on where to find the first step of the task flow.
Iteration
Iterations were made based on usability testing results.
Decided to use the opportunity of there being no call to action for logging in for users to create an extra added feature to Crunchyroll.
Redesigned the log in call to action
Final Prototype
Conclusion
Although this is an existing platform, going through the entire design process helped understand what actual users pain points were and not just the ones I thought should be addressed.
Through this I learned and decided my added feature would be tailored to the multi-user profile pain point. While doing usability testing I found another user pain point through participants having a challenging time on where to start with the task flow. I took this opportunity to create an additional added feature of a log in call to action to help users find where to log in to their user accounts.
For next steps I would focus on some of the other user pain points like setting a language preference or better organization of content for the Crunchyroll website.
